              ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಗೋವಿಗೆ ಅಗ್ರಮಾನ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದುಗಳಿಗೆ ಗೋವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ಕೋಟಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಇವೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಗೋವು ಪೂಜ ನಿಯವಾಗಿದೆ.ಹಳೆಯ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಭಾರತದ ಜನರು ಗೋವುಗಳ ಸಾಕಾಣಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅನೇಕ ದೇಶಿಯ ತಳಿಗಳ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು.ಗಿರ್, ಸಾಹಿವಾಲ , ರೆಡ್ ಸಿಂಧಿ, ಕಾಂಕ್ರೇಜ್, ಹಳ್ಳಿಕಾರ್, ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಗಿಡ್ಡ ಹೀಗೆ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ತಳಿಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ ಇಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ.               ಅಳಿವಿನಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಗೋತಳಿಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾಲನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತಿಟ್ಟ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ತಳಿ ಕಗ್ಗ .ಇವು ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಕೆಲವು ಭಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ.ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ತಳಿಯ ಹೋರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಲವನ್ನು  ಉಳುಮೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು .ಇವು ಕಪ್ಪು, ಬಿಳಿ,  ನಸುಗೆಂಪು,  ಬೂದು,  ಹೀಗೆ ನಾನಾ ವರ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಬಹುಶಹ ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಗಿಡ್ಡ, ಓಂಗೋಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಿಲಾರಿ ತಳಿಗಳ ಮಿಶ್ರಣದಿಂದ ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯಾದ ಜಾತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.ಹೋರಿಗಳು ಓಂ ಗೋಲ್  ತಳಿಯಂತೆ ದೇಹದ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಗಿಡ್ಡಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬಲವಾದ ಕಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ಗಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದೊಡ್ಡದಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೋಡುಗಳು ಅಗಲ, ನೇರ...

                    ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಭಾಗದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ .ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿನ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಳೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಲೆತಲಾಂತರದಿಂದಲೂ ಅಡಕೆಯನ್ನೇ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಬೆಳೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಾಗಿ ಅಡಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಿದು. ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಡಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ನಮ್ಮದಾಗಿತ್ತು.                                       ಸುಮಾರು ಹದಿನೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದೀಚೆ ಅಡಕೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತಮ ದರ ಬರಲು ಆರಂಭವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ  ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲೂ ಅಡಕೆ ತೋಟಗಳು ತಲೆಯೆತ್ತತೊಡಗಿದವು. ನಮ್ಮದು ಗುಡ್ಡಗಾಡು ಪ್ರದೇಶವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಮಳೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬೀಳುವುದರಿಂದ, ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಫಲವತ್ತತೆಯು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ತೋಟಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಬಯಲು ಸೀಮೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಯಾವ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರು ವುದರಿಂದ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಖರ್ಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತೋಟದ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ ಆಗುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತಮ ಫಸಲು ಕೂಡ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಆಗಲು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ನೀರು ಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನೂ ಮರೆಯುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ. ...

ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದೇ  ಒಂದು ಅದೃಷ್ಟ. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ನಡುವಿನ ಸೊಬಗಿನ ತಾಣ ಶಿರಸಿ. ಶಿರಸಿಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಪುಟ್ಟದಾದ ಊರು ಮತ್ತಿಘಟ್ಟ . ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಕಂಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ, ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ವಾತಾವರಣ, ತಂಪಾಗಿ ಬೀಸುವ ತಂಗಾಳಿ, ಚಿಲಿಪಿಲಿಗುಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಕಲರವ, ಕಾಡುಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಔಷಧೀಯ ಗುಣವಿರುವ ಗಿಡಗಳು, ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣ ಸಣ್ಣದಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯುವ ಹೊಳೆಗಳು, ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ನೋಡಲು ಬಲು ಸುಂದರ.                         ಆ ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೂರ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಮನೆಗಳು, ಯಾವ ಗಲಾಟೆ ಗದ್ದಲಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೆ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಜನರು, ಮನೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ಇರುವ ಅಡಿಕೆ ಮರಗಳು, ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದೇ ಆನಂದ . ಮನೆಯ ಮುಂದಿರುವ ಹೊಳೆ , ಆ ಹೊಳೆಯ ನೀರು ಹರಿಯುವ ಜುಳು ಜುಳು ಸದ್ದು ಅದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ.                                                                ಇನ್ನು ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಂತೂ ಬಲು ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಊರು ನಮ್ಮೂರು, ತುಂಬಿ ಹರಿಯುವ ಹೊಳೆ, ಅಚ್ಛಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿರುವ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ. ನಮ್ಮ ಊರ...
